Dotcom Security seals cybersecurity partnership with Huawei

Africa has seen a sharp rise in cybercrime incidents this year. According to INTERPOL’s 2025 Africa Cyberthreat Assessment Report, cybercrime accounts for more than 30% of any type of crime in Western and Eastern Africa. This means that around 1 in every 3 crimes committed are in an online environment within these regions.

The report continues with more concerning statistics. In 2024, South Africa suffered nearly 18 000 ransomware detections, the highest number on the African continent. In some African countries, suspected scam notifications rose by 3 000%.

With expanding internet access, businesses need to become more vigilant as South Africa makes strides in becoming a more digitised economy. As digitisation rapidly accelerates, the threat landscape will continue to grow more rapidly and become more sophisticated. Sectors such as government, financial institutions, telecommunications, and enterprises must firmly grasp that cybersecurity is no longer just a technical problem.

Advances in AI technology has further intensified cyber attacks. AI-powered malware is not only revolutionising business operations – it’s increasingly becoming an effective cybercrime tool for criminals. AI-driven attacks can automate malicious activity, exploit vulnerabilities, and bypass traditional security measures. As a result, USAID predicts that the global cost of cybercrime will rise to $24 trillion in the next two years.

Moving forward, Africa’s public and private organisations should not only invest in AI for streamlined operations but also prioritise securing their online environments from AI-driven cyber threats. These types of cybersecurity solutions simply aren’t ‘nice to have’ options, as AI technology is a clear and critical threat to Africa’s growing data ecosystems.

Meeting Africa’s future digital demands
As a fundamental role player in the digitisation process on the African continent, Huawei understands the importance of strategic investments to enable digital transformation in developing countries. A robust cybersecurity portfolio forms an essential part of addressing Africa’s future digital demands.

Huawei offers a comprehensive suite of cybersecurity technologies including next-gen firewalls, threat intelligence, endpoint protection, and secure cloud access, all designed with AI-driven analytics and zero-trust principles. Built for both scale and resilience, Huawei’s security stack supports both legacy environments and cloud-native transitions, which is a rare combination in today’s digital landscape.

To further align with Africa’s cybersecurity evolution, Huawei has formed a strategic partnership with Dotcom Security, a key cyber security advisory services provider across public and private sectors. This bold and deliberate decision is driven by Huawei’s intention to expand its advanced security portfolio across Africa with additional world-class, scalable, and intelligence-driven technologies.

“Dotcom Security identified Huawei’s unified, AI-enhanced and cloud-integrated cyber security solutions as a critical enabler to meet the continent’s emerging security challenges,” explains Dotcom Security’s MD Coenie Van Der Merwe. “By aligning with Huawei, Dotcom Security aims to equip African organisations with the tools needed to build robust, adaptive, and cost-effective cyber defence architectures.”

Huawei’s cyber security portfolio, which includes next-generation firewalls, DDOS, cloud security, zero trust frameworks, threat detection, and Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) offers unmatched integration, visibility, and performance across networks and cloud. These solutions are optimised for African infrastructures and emerging digital platforms, making them ideal for service providers, enterprises, and governments across the continent.

“This focused partnership represents a strategic turning point for how we enable security in Africa,” says Stephan Le Roux, Dotcom Security’s Head of Sales & Strategic Partnerships. “Cybersecurity can no longer be fragmented or reactive. With Huawei’s globally proven technology and Dotcom Security with its regional expertise, we are delivering security that can scale while keeping customers safe.”
